Abstract

Introduction: Dystonia is a movement disorder, medical treatment is often unsatisfactory, there are few studies on the use of ECP in children with dystonia.
Material and Methods: Were included 12 patients with dystonia who underwent by deep brain stimulation treatment between 2005 and 2014, aged under 15 years at the time of surgery. Each patient was evaluated by dystonia scale Burke-Fahn-Marsden before the intervention and after the onset of stimulation at 3, 6 and 12 months and annually.
Results: The median age of patients at the onset was 8.5 years (range 1-10), the mean age at surgery was 12 years (range 8-15). Dystonia was generalized in 75% of patients. The DYT1 mutation was present in 83%. 67% of patients had no previous injury. The target chosen in all cases was the internal globus pallidus.
Discussion: Our study shows that there is a significant functional improvement with ECP. Although the loss of efficiency with long-term ECP seems to be implied, sometimes by the progression of underlying disease. It is essential to accumulate more data from prospective studies to really determine whether the benefits of ECP in pediatric dystonia can keep in adulthood.
