Se revisa los conceptos generales acerca de la cirugía de la epilepsia y se describe los objetivos básicos de la selección de pacientes: 1) Definir si una epilepsia es médicamente intratable, 2) identificar la zona epileptógena y 3) determinar su relación con las áreas funcionales del cerebro. Es relevante, además, tener claro el grado de impacto que una cirugía exitosa pueda tener en el desempeño vital del paciente. Se menciona las distintas modalidades actuales del manejo quirúrgico de la epilepsia, identificando sus fortalezas y debilidades y los logros que se espera por cada patología.
