Abstract

The objective of the multicenter, randomized, non-blinded, crossover study was to determine the safety and efficacy of a device that delivers traditional tonic stimulation and burst stimulation to patients with chronic axial and/or extremity pain. Following successful tonic stimulation testing, 100 individuals were randomized to receive one mode of stimulation for the first 12 weeks, and then the other mode of stimulation for the next 12 weeks. This pilot study featured 12 patients who underwent a one-month trial period with an external pulse generator. During the testing period, burst stimulation resulted in an 84% and 96% reduction from baseline in mean visual analogue scale (VAS) scores for axial and extremity pain, respectively.
