Introduction: The present paper constitutes a systematic review of evidence-based treatments for the management of chronic pain and substance abuse comorbidity. It has been proposed that in patients with chronic pain there are neuroadaptive mechanisms similar to those of people with addictions and that in both conditions there could be found an alteration in hedonic capacity, compulsive drug seeking and high levels of stress. The aim is to promote the importance of implementing effective psychotherapeutic approaches in order to alleviate the prevalence of substance use in patients with chronic diseases.
Material and Methods: The present work is carried out through a review of outcome studies, which allows us to identify and systematize the available research in order to evaluate the results presented. A total of N=6 studies were included.
Results: There are psychotherapeutic treatments included within the cognitive behavioral model that have shown encouraging results for addressing the comorbidity of both problems.
Discussion and Conclusions: Based on the proposed objective and the analyzed results, it is concluded that a greater number of controlled studies and research are required in order to be used in the clinical setting. It is challenging and necessary to promote research in Argentina considering the lack of development of this subject in our country.
