It has been shown that stress plays a critical role in the origin and development of depression. In this regard, it may be the result of interactions between biological and environmental converging factors. Among the former, it has been demonstrated that increased levels of corticotrophin releasing factor and cortisol, increased activity of the amygdala, decreased activity of the hippocampus, decreased serotonergic neurotransmission, leads to development of depression. Genetic polymorphisms and epigenetic mechanisms represent important factors of biological vulnerability. Studies oriented at identifying and understanding the mechanisms underlying different biological factors of vulnerability and their potential interactions may lead to the development of novel treatment and prevention approaches of depression particularly in the vulnerable population.
