Objective: To expose the different techniques and preliminary results obtained by the Functional Neurosurgery and Stereotaxy Unit of the Tacuarembó’s Regional Neurosurgery Center during the first two years of work.
Procedures: 44 procedures were made: 23 stereotactic surgeries, 5 of them were functional procedures: pallidotomies in three cases and the implant of deep brain stimulation electrodes in one case. The four patients have Parkinson’s disease. The fifth functional procedure was an hypothalamotomy for aggressiveness.
Eleven patients were operated for trigeminal neuralgia by percutaneous balloon compression. Ten patients were operated for back low pain by radiofrequency facet rizothomy.
Eleven stereotactic biopsies were made and all of them were positives. In 10 cases were tumours and in one case was an abscess. The 7 stereotactic surgeries remainder were 4 guided craniotomies for tumour resection, evacuation of an external gangliobasal hematoma, placement of a ventricular catheter, and a ventricle cisternostomy with endoscopic assistance in a patient with isolated lateral ventricle.
Results: The patients with Parkinson’s disease improve their symptoms and the diskinesyas disappeared after surgery. Then their quality of life improved too.
The patient submitted to an hypothalamotomy hasn’t aggressiveness seizures and he has had a good social insertion.
Complications didn’t happen in stereotactic surgeries.
The patients operated for trigeminal neuralgia between 2 and 20 months of follow up had not sudden facial pain. In the cases operated for back low pain, the pain episodes improved evaluated with analogical visual scale.
