Ballooning for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia

509 patients with trigeminal neuralgia treated by percutaneous microcompression of the Gasserian ganglion are presented. The operation was performed under general anesthesia and fluoroscopy. The female sex, the second and third branches or both at the same time are those most frequently affected by neuralgia. The age range was 32 and 93 years. In 478 patients (94%) the pain disappeared immediately after the operation. In 31 patients (6%) the pain did not disappear. Fifty presented otalgia that disappeared a few days later and 268 presented some degree of facial dysesthesia that decreased over time and was well tolerated. In 135, mild hypoesthesia occurred in the postoperative period, which was well tolerated and progressively subsided in the following weeks. No patient presented compromised corneal sensitivity, keratitis or painful anesthesia.
