Introduction: The peak of the stereotactic surgery is due to be a surgical minimal invasive method to arrive to a target with great accuracy. One of its applications is the stereotactic biopsy.
Material and method: 71 patients with intracranial lesions subjected to cerebral biopsy, by means of stereotactic surgery guided by computed tomography.
Results: In 70 of the 71 reported cases, the biopsy was diagnostic; 49 patients had diagnosed of cerebral tumor, 10 patients presented cystic lesions (cysticercus in 6 cases, cyst aracnoideo in 3, and colloidal cyst of the third ventricle in 1), in 7 patients cerebral abscess was diagnosed that was drained. Most of lesions were located in deep regions of the brain or at level of the brainstem, where the high risk of morbimortality of the conventional surgery contraindicates the surgical resection.
Conclusions: The stereotactic biopsy is an effective procedure and insurance for the histological determination of deep cerebral lesions with difficult neurosurgical access. With the stereotactic biopsy important complications were not presented.
