Basics of stereotactic surgery: past, present and future

Abstract

With the beginning of neurosurgical practice, the great difficulty of approaching the deep structures of the brain arose. Access, for example, to the basal ganglia, involves an unavoidable and unacceptable risk of damage to eloquent areas beneath the brain surface or those adjacent to these ganglia. Conventional open surgery techniques are essentially inappropriate methods for surgery of deep brain structures, despite the great advancement of microsurgical techniques. Stereotactic surgery was born as a solution to these limitations.
