Psychosurgery, or surgical treatment for psychiatric diseases, has an extensive history that dates back to ancient time and involves every aspect of the clinical areas of neurosciences. This article discuses the history of psychosurgery, its expansion in the 19th century, and the circumstances of its use and neglect during last century. The article reviews the evolution to modern times of psychosurgery and the underlying neurobiology to the psychosurgical procedures currently in use. The article also mentions the current tendencies in the field of neuromodulation and describes its future course. This article provides an accurate and comprehensive introduction to resent, current and future tendencies of neurosurgery for the treatment of psychiatric diseases.
