Abstract

Introduction: The essential tremor is characterized by low frequency, mainly affecting the upper extremities and less frequently the lower limbs and head. The origin of this disease is not well known. Although, a familiar pattern of autosomal dominant hereditary transmission have been described.

Patients and method: Three patients with essential tremor refractory to pharmacotherapy underwent stereotactic thalamotomy of the ventro lateral nucleus. In all cases the procedure was unilateral.

Results: In two of the three patients, the tremor disappeared completely; in one patient the tremor decreased more than 50%. Tremor was assessed by the Unified Parkinson’s scale. In none of the cases complications related to surgery were observed.

Conclusion: The stereotactic thalamotomy of the VL nucleus for treatment of essential tremor can be beneficial in these patients due to its low morbidity and good results in selected patients.
