Introduction: Fibromyalgia syndrome is a rheumatic disease of unknown origin, which mainly affects women and causes various symptoms, including pain, sleep disorders, depression and fatigue, thus affecting all aspects of the patient’s life. Currently in our country we have few studies on quality of life and functionality in this patient group.
Objectives: To describe the severity index in patients suffering from Fibromyalgia using the Combined Index Questionnaire (ICAF). To evaluate the applicability of ICAF in the Chilean population.
Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive observational study in which Chilean women affected by Fibromyalgia belonging to the COFIBROCHILE Corporation participated. The ICAF questionnaire was implemented in its original format, in a self-applied way, and the personal and socio-demographic background of the participants was also recorded. For analysis of the results, the results of the T-score (mean 50, SD 10) were standardized. The results are presented in range 50 and percentile 10, using the STATA 10.2 statistical package.
Results: Participants were a total of 43 women, median age 48 years, ranging between 27 to 85 years, with a fibromyalgia diagnosis of 5.5 years average, within a range of 0-16 years, where 89% of the patients have had at least 12 years of study, and 95% have at least one co morbid condition such as irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis or depression. ICAF total score was 47.2 with a range of 22.3- 75.8. Description according to evaluation factors resulted in thefollowing scores: Physical = 48.7, Emotional = 48.24, activecoping = 55.4 and passive coping = 52.7.
Conclusion: The group reported a severity index within the range of the average standardized mean, presenting a multidimensional commitment. Final results are consistent with similar studies in populations sharing same health and socio-demographic characteristics. The applicability of the questionnaire was fast, without need of further intervention to support its understanding. The ICAF questionnaire seems to be a useful tool in the characterization of the multidimensional severity of fibromyalgia, in the assessment of a kinesthetic intervention. Prior to its validation process, cultural adaptations are recommended.
