Somatic syndromes occur very frequently in medical consultation. They are accompanied by: (i) pain in localized or multiple locations, (ii) functional alterations in one or several body systems, (iii) continuous complaints of weakness and fatigue. For each of the problematic symptoms, a frequency of 6% to 36% has been reported in primary care. About half of patients diagnosed with “functional syndrome” will be disabled during the year following diagnosis. This review explores the most common functional syndromes.
