Electrode extension fracture in deep brain stimulation for cervical dystonia: case report and literature review.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is used as an effective, adaptable and reversible method for the treatment of various neurological conditions. Despite their minimally invasive concept, these procedures are not free of complications. In this work we present the case of a patient with cervical dystonia secondary to the use of neuroleptics associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder, who received implantation of deep brain electrodes in both internal globus pallidus. It evolved with a sudden reappearance of symptoms due to the breakage of the extensor cables on two occasions. We describe the resolution of the case through placement of expandable extensors and relocation of the generator to the interscapular space, as well as an updated review of the literature.
