Ultrasound-guided lumbar medial ramus and intra-articular facet block is used in a variety of clinical diagnostic situations as well as treatment for pain involving the aforementioned lumbar facet joints. Diagnostically, this block allows for precise placement of the needle tip to determine if a specific pair of median branch nerves are in fact related to the patient's pain. Spinal ultrasound scanning offers several advantages when used to guide procedures that involve the placement of needles in very precise targets, both centroneuroaxial and lateroneuroaxial. The use of ultrasound in centroneuroaxial blocks (epidural, subdural) reduces the need for multiple levels of puncture and patient discomfort, allowing its routine use to be recommended.
